Humble Starts, Big Strides: Reading and Southampton Foster Growth in the Women’s Game

Across university women’s rugby, growth often begins quietly, with a small group of students, a simple idea, and the confidence to try something new. This year, both Reading University and the University of Southampton reflect that spirit as they expand opportunities for new players and build vibrant, supportive rugby communities.

At Reading, history was made when the Women’s 2nd team played their first ever home match. It was a milestone that showed how far the club has come. What began with a handful of enthusiastic players has become a thriving environment, where half the members come from non‑rugby backgrounds. For many, the attraction is the chance to try something completely new; for others, it is the camaraderie and confidence that rugby brings.

The development team has become a vital stepping stone, giving players the space to learn at their own pace, without pressure and surrounded by encouragement. Their debut home fixture against the Didcot Valkyries drew supporters from across campus and marked a significant moment for many new players. With support that has included a small SRFU development grant, the team is now entering its busiest season so far, reflecting the hard work of coaches, captains, and players. As President Lola Davies noted "the match showed not only determination but also the values that define the sport."

Further south, the University of Southampton Women’s Rugby Club is experiencing its own period of progress. New to the Inner Warrior Series this year, the team has welcomed the learning‑focused environment the programme offers. For players who had never picked up a rugby ball before arriving at university, these fixtures have been transformative, helping them build confidence, communication, and game understanding. As one Southampton player explained,

“I learned so much so quickly, from spacing to intent, and playing different teams really pushed me to improve. It gave me confidence and helped us gel as a squad.” Several of these emerging players have now progressed into the BUCS team, strengthening the club during one of its most successful seasons.

Beyond results, Southampton has been committed to building community, forming links with local clubs and delivering its annual charity day in support of the MND Association.

Together, these stories highlight the power of opportunity, encouragement, and grassroots energy. From early steps to meaningful achievements, university women’s rugby continues to grow, one player, one team, and one milestone at a time.
