Spotlight: UBHRFC - 80 Years of Medics Rugby

United Bristol Hospitals RFC (UBHRFC) is celebrating an extraordinary milestone this season, marking 80 years since the club was founded in 1946. Originally created to give medical students at the University of Bristol a way to balance demanding academic schedules with social yet high-level rugby, the club has grown into a welcoming and community-driven side within the university game. Today, UBHRFC attracts its largest and most diverse membership yet, drawing in students from across the university, not just medics.

This year, the club used their SRFU grant to deliver a hugely successful “Club Day” in the Wye Valley. Players from both the men’s and women’s teams, a mix of returning members and new arrivals, were placed into small groups and challenged to navigate their way to the activity centre in a friendly race across the River Wye. Once everyone arrived, the squad came together to set out their aims for the season and reaffirm the club values that define UBHRFC: enjoyment, support, legacy, and a commitment to playing high‑quality rugby.

A major focus of the day was the club’s role as a support network. Players discussed the importance of recognising when times get tough and knowing who to turn to, a message deeply rooted in UBHRFC’s long‑standing partnership with The Ted Senior Foundation. The foundation’s ongoing work around mental health and wellbeing continues to be one of the club’s greatest strengths and an essential part of its identity.

Reflecting on the day, Club Captain Andrew Mead said: “I am very pleased with how the day went; it is always a challenge to integrate new members each year, but today went a long way to helping build our community!” The event marked a record intake and helped forge early connections that will carry into the season.

UBHRFC’s growth off the field has been matched by competitive success. Over the last three seasons, the 1st XV, 2nd XV, and Women’s team have each won their respective competitions for the first time in the club’s history, demonstrating the depth, ambition, and talent across the squads.

As the club looks ahead to its 80th anniversary celebration on 7 February, excitement is building. Alumni from across the decades — from teams of the 1960s and 70s to players who only left last year — will return to celebrate together. Their presence is a powerful reminder of the lifelong impact UBHRFC has on its members. More than a rugby club, it remains a community rooted in connection, tradition, and the shared experience of something special.
